"Port Said Street" was originally a waterway known as the "Egyptian Gulf (Khalij Al-Masri)." Its excavation began during the reign of King "Necho," and it was later re-dug by the Romans and Caliph "Umar ibn al-Khattab." It was used to transport supplies and was a part of Cairene life until "Khedive Ismail" filled it in. The current "Port Said Street" was built on its remains, leaving the gulf as a buried part of the city's history.
